The German intermodal service provider Kombiverkehr reported a 1.1% increase in shipments in 2013, thereby putting an end to the volume shrinkage of 2012, which was caused by the weak economy. The company handled 937,671 truck consignments (around 1.88 million teu) in 2013, and shifted 10,459 more long-distance HGV transports from road to rail.

The Frankfurt (Germany)-based intermodal service provider Kombiverkehr shifted precisely 10,459 more long-distance trucks to the rails in 2013, compared to the previous year. The number of shipments rose to 937,671 last year, an increase of 1.1% vis-à-vis 2012. Kombiverkehr’s domestic (+1.4%) and international connections (+1%) both grew almost equally well. The transport volume in 2013 amounted to 295,395 road shipments (national) and 642,276 (international).

The Basel (Switzerland)-based intermodal operator IMS Rail Switzerland AG has started to operate a new shuttle train between the container terminals in Frenkendorf (near Basel) and Melzo (east of Milan/Italy). The service, which is designed for unaccompanied intermodal traffic (UIT), is available twice per week in both directions. Direct scheduled connections, some of which are operated several times per day, run between Melzo and Italy’s deep sea terminals Genova Voltri Mare, Genova Sech, La Spezia LSCT and Ravenna.
