Su empresa, North American Production Sharing (NAPS), sufría una sangría de clientes que parecía imparable. “Nuestro trabajo es ofrecer servicios a fabricantes internacionales que buscan instalarse en México. De pronto, todos parecían querer irse a China”, recuerda. Las famosas ‘maquilas’ que dan trabajo a cientos de miles de trabajadores mexicanos languidecían, como si estuvieran destinadas a desaparecer.

Asia has a population of 4.2 billion people (60% of the world’s population) and is currently the fastest-growing economic force in the world. China is the leading country there, followed by Japan, Russia, India, South Korea and Indonesia. Thanks to the steeply rising advance of industrialisation, the economies of India and China are growing fastest of all.

Asia’s shipping community is in «need for a unified Asian voice», as Esben Poulsson, honorary secretary of the Singapore Shipping Association emphasised to delegates at the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) conference this week. Poulsson said it was essential that the views of Asian shipowners are heard loud and clear in the area of shipping regulation, especially on the many current issues such as piracy and armed robbery, the ballast water convention, greenhouse gas emissions, etc.
