Spring feelings for all of Europe’s leading airfreight centres (Noticia recomendada)

Olivier Jankovec, the director general of the airports association ACI Europe, cited «solid air traffic figures for Europe» when reviewing the air cargo statistics for March 2014. The growth rate – in the airfreight segment it came to an impressive 6% – reflects the improving overall economy, «especially in the European Union, where consumer confidence has reached pre-crisis levels and GDP growth is set to gain further momentum,» according to Jankovec.

Preliminary financial performance figures released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) revealed that Asia Pacific airlines recorded USD 2.5 billion in combined net earnings in 2013, a 55% fall compared to the USD 5.6 billion reported for the year 2012. The Latam Airlines Group reported a Q1/2014 operating income of USD 146.7 million, excluding non-recurring costs related to fleet restructuring. The increase of 28.5% as compared to Q1/2013 was driven by strong improvements in the results of Latam’s passenger services in most markets, especially those in Brazil, offset by the 18.5% depreciation of the Brazilian real over this period, as well as by weaker results in the cargo business, with ATKs declining by 6.6% compared to Q1/2013.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) released data showing airfreight markets in March were up by 5.9% compared to a year ago and capacity grew by 3.4%. While this marks a significant improvement in volumes compared to March 2013, much of the growth took place in the final quarter of 2013 (over and above the usual year-end volume growth). Since the beginning of the year, air cargo volumes have been basically flat. This plateau in volumes is consistent with the recent pause in improvements to business confidence and world trade.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has released data for global airfreight markets in February showing a 2.9% increase in demand compared to February 2013. The first two months of 2014 have seen an overall 3.6% improvement in demand over the previous year. This continues the strengthening in cargo markets which began in H2/2013.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has urged governments in Latin America and the Caribbean region (Latin America) to take full advantage of the connectivity provided by aviation in order to chart a more successful future for the region. The economic and social benefits of a successful aviation sector are clear – some 4.6 million jobs and USD1 07 billion in GDP in Latin America. But many governments in the region are pursuing policies which treat the industry as a luxury rather than as a catalyst for economic growth.

The modal shift to ocean freight has cost the air cargo sector almost 2 percentage points of annual growth since 2000, and is set to continue at a moderate pace, according to research by the Seabury Group and the International Air Transport Association (Iata). The study by the advisory services firm highlighted that airfreight’s share of total global containerised or unitised cargo transported declined from 3.1% in 2000 to 1.7% in 2013. Around one third of this market share loss is due to the modal shift – in which a product that used to be shipped by air is now being conveyed by sea or surface transport. Commodity mix factors and value effects were the other main causes, the study identified.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has released figures for global air cargo markets showing that growth continued to flatline in May, broadly following the trend of the last 18 months. Global freight tonne kilometres increased by just 0.8% in May compared to a year ago. Capacity, however, increased by 2.1% causing load factors to fall to 44.9% – their lowest level since the post crisis recovery.

Las aerolíneas mundiales registrarán un beneficio de 12.700 millones de dólares (9.750 millones de euros) en 2013, un 67% más que en el año anterior, según las previsiones de la Asociación Internacional de Transporte Aéreo (IATA, en sus siglas en inglés). De esta forma, la organización mejora en 2.100 millones de dólares (1.612 millones de euros) las cifras que manejaba el pasado mes de marzo en las que estimaba que el beneficio al cierre del ejercicio se situaría en 10.600 millones de dólares (8.136 millones de euros).
